What it looks like from the hiring manager's side
130 people applied in one afternoon. Only one got a strong yes.
Last year I hired a product designer at N26. I looked at 30 selected portfolios and interviewed 7 people. One candidate stood out right away, but I kept quiet. I wanted the rest of our hiring panel (from design, product, and engineering) to speak first so I wouldn't influence them. Every single one said a strong yes.
Their portfolio was simple to scan in seconds: the problem, what they actually did, and the impact.
Sounds obvious? It isn't. I look at portfolios all the time, and most people miss this completely.
In the interview, their story matched their CV. I knew immediately that this person actually did what they said, and knew the why behind every decision. We had a real conversation, and they weren't afraid to bring a fresh view and debate.
